Frankincense is used as an incense in many churches and for religious ceremonies (there are more than 50 references in the Bible!). In the Middle East, it has been used for thousands of years for it's healing powers and to increase the ability to connect with the creator and was given as a gift by the Magi to Christ. It was used in Ancient Egypt as en embalming agent as well as perfumery. The tears are created by injuring the tree and as the ole-gum resin exudes from the tree and reaches the air, it forms these globular chunks - tears.
Myrrh is used as an incense in many churches and for religious ceremonies. Myrrh, native to Ethiopia, Somalia and Yemen, imparts a medicinal and earthy scent when burned. It was used thousands of years ago by the ancient Egyptians in embalming mixtures as well as during the middle ages to cover up the malodorous scent during funerals. This holy resin has had value in the past equivalent to gold and was even used to anoint kings.
Copal is used as an incense in many religious ceremonies. Copal was used by Mexico's indigenous peoples, including the Mayans and Aztecs for religious rites. The Shamans would burn the Copal to connect with their gods. Copal has also been used during ancient times for filling cavities and was used by Native Indians of Brazil as a medicinal plant.
Copal imparts a sweet and inviting aroma when burned, however insects and pests do not like the scent. Try burning some copal next time you're relaxing on the porch.
